Even though they’re baby teeth, improperly taking care of them can cause tooth decay, as well as future dental problems. That’s why it’s important to teach your child good dental habits! Not only will practicing healthy dental hygiene prevent childhood dental issues, but it will also set your child up for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Practice Great Oral Hygiene Habits at a Young Age

Right after they erupt, your child’s teeth are at risk of tooth decay. Besides creating cavities, this can even lead to tooth loss.

Since your child will not be able to brush his/her teeth by themselves, you’ll need to supervise them to ensure that it’s done properly. Ensure that all the plaque is removed plus monitor closely for brown or white spots, which could be signs of early decay.

The brushing technique changes depending on the age of your child. Follow the tips below to ensure you’re completing it correctly:

Birth – 12 Months: Both after breakfast and before bedtime, gently wipe the gums with a clean washcloth or gauze. After the first tooth appears, clean the surface using a baby toothbrush and water.

Children 12 – 24 Months: Use a pea-size amount of non-fluoride toothpaste and a child-size toothbrush to brush the teeth. Angle the brush at 45 degrees to the gum, move the brush softly back and forth. The inner surface of the front teeth can be brushed gently up and down while holding the brush vertically. Remember to brush the tongue to remove any bacteria, too.

Children Over 2 Years Old: When two teeth are touching (generally around age two), regular flossing can begin. At age 3, a pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste can be used to help prevent cavities.

Serving a Healthy Diet to Your Child

Besides practicing proper brushing, your child should eat a healthy diet. Limiting the amount of sugar your child consumes plays a big part in ensuring that they develop excellent oral hygiene.

When sugar is regularly consumed or if it stays in your child’s mouth for long periods of time (i.e. sticky caramel, gum or dried fruits), the risk of developing cavities increases. Prevent this from happening by brushing your child’s teeth after they consume a sugary food. Also, do not allow your child to have a sugar-containing liquid in a sippy cup for a prolonged period.
