For patients with one or more missing teeth, dental implants provide a permanent solution to replace those teeth. A dental implant offers the most realistic look and feel, and Stoney Creek Dental is proud to offer this solution to our patients.
What is a dental implant?
Dental implants are permanent, non-removable prosthetic teeth for patients who wish to replace missing teeth. They consist of a titanium peg or “root,” which is implanted into the jaw and a porcelain cap (tooth) affixed to that peg.
The procedure is usually performed in two stages. In the first stage, the titanium root is inserted into the jaw. Once the jaw has had time to heal, and the bone begins to fuse around the titanium, the porcelain crown is placed. The crown itself is matched to the colour of your remaining natural teeth and shaped for a perfect fit.
Dental implants can either be used on their own or in combination with a bridge if you have several consecutive missing teeth.
Once the implant is complete, it will look, feel, and function just like a natural tooth and can be cared for in the same way through regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups.
Who is a good candidate for a dental implant?
Having a missing tooth affects not only a person’s self-confidence, but it can also interfere with talking and chewing. Furthermore, left untreated, it can lead to more serious dental issues such as shifting teeth and even bone loss in the jaw.
Most patients who wish to replace missing teeth are good candidates for dental implants, provided they have sufficient bone density in their jaw to support the peg.
Uncontrolled diabetes is one of the few medical problems that can jeopardize the success of implant treatment. Medical issues are less commonly a determinant in qualifying for dental implants than the quality and quantity of accessible bone for implant implantation. Even those who have lost a large amount of bone may be eligible for dental implant treatment if they undergo additional treatments to replace or add bone.
Advantages of dental implants:
Dental implants have many advantages over other types of tooth replacement methods, including:
- Dental implants offer the most natural look, feel, and function for replacement teeth.
- A dental implant can be cared for in the same way that you would care for your natural teeth.
- A tooth replacement can help prevent bone loss in the jaw.
- Dental Implants can help prevent surrounding natural teeth from shifting.
- Properly cared for, a tooth replacement can last a lifetime.
Are there any disadvantages to dental implants?
Dental implant surgery is generally considered safe, but there are risks such as bleeding and infection with any type of surgery. It is extremely important, therefore, to follow your dentist’s instructions, particularly during the preparation and healing periods.
Most people will feel some discomfort after the procedure, but this can be treated with ice and over the counter pain medicines. Any pain or discomfort should dissipate 3 to 7 days following the procedure.
Finally, while dental implants are widely considered the most effective method of replacing missing teeth for most patients, it is an expensive procedure due to the time and skill needed. However, many patients consider the cost to be worth it since they are also the longest-lasting solution. Furthermore, many dental plans will, at least partially, cover the cost of dental implants as they are an important part of your oral health.
How long do dental implants last?
An artificial replacement tooth can last a lifetime with proper brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups. The dental implant screw itself should never have any problems. However, the dental crown, may need replacing due to dental hygiene, wear and tear, genetic issues, or accidents that might cause cracking or breakage.
